Moby's "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die" was first released in March 1995 from his third album “Everything Is Wrong”.

It signifies a desire for quiet refuge from a loud, demanding world, expressing deep weariness and longing for peace, often interpreted as wanting to "die" metaphorically from sensory overload or emotional struggle, famously used in “Stranger Things” during moments of near-death or profound loss for characters like Will and Max, making the lyrics resonate with survival and survival's aftermath.

The phrase captures a feeling of being overwhelmed, where the coldness of winter mirrors an internal coldness, prompting a wish to simply cease struggling against the "tide".

With these current feelings in my heart, being a massive fan of “Stranger Things”, and the passing of my bestie recently, feel this, my Magic Remix, so enjoy!

Irish singer, songwriter and political activist Sinéad O'Connor recently passed away. She consistently brought attention to issues related to child abuse (notably during that 1992 "Saturday Night Live" performance), human rights, racism, organised religion, and women's rights. Throughout her music career, she spoke about her spiritual journey, activism, socio-political views, as well as her trauma and mental health struggles.

Since then I’ve delved ever so deeply into her vast back catalogue of music…quite literally hours and hours of listening, singing and quite often crying! But I’ve finally narrowed it down to 11 of my favourite songs, including a couple of amazing collabs plus a very special closing song! I really hope you love this "folk rock to deep beats" journey I've created for you to remember her by.

Episode 98: UNIQUE (My Fave Rauhofer Mix)

Peter Rauhofer (April 29, 1965 - May 7, 2013) was an Austrian-American House producer, remixer and DJ. Peter was born in Wien (Vienna) and mainly lived in New York City. Peter first got his start as an A&R man for GIG Records. Since his first recording under his well known alias, Club 69, Peter had come to be one of the most in-demand remixers of the late 90's/2000's.

Club 69 was one of the most popular alias of Peter Rauhofer in the 1990's. At first, Rauhofer used different aliases to release his music. 'Unique' (1991) was first released under the names Danube Dance (a name he took from a compilation project of the same name released on GiG Records), Unique (16) and Saxmachine. These projects all featured the vocals of Kim Cooper.

In 1992, a remix of 'Unique' and the single 'Let Me Be Your Underwear' began to be played in Europe and in North America. Both tracks became instant club hits.

He was famous for a variety of his remixes including Cher's "Believe" and a number of Madonna's songs including "Nothing Really Matters", "American Life", "Nothing Fails", "Nobody Knows Me", "Get Together", "Impressive Instant" and "4 Minutes", as well as her collaboration with Britney Spears, "Me Against the Music" and various collaborations with Janet Jackson ("Throb" and "Just A Little While" to name a few). He has also provided remixes for Kylie Minogue, Whitney Houston, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Yoko Ono, Pink, Tori Amos, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Book Of Love, Soft Cell, Duran Duran and Mariah Carey, among others. He was also behind the tribal house record label Star 69 and was a frequent producer of the label's releases.

His style shifted from a house/tribal vibe to a more tribal/progressive feel with his later mixes. There wasn't a time in the late 1990s when one would go to a US club to hear many of his mixes playing through the speakers. Peter has also recorded material under the aliases, Saxmachine, Danube Dance, House Heroes and Size Queen. Peter once worked with Victor Calderone for The Collaboration project and once with the Pet Shop Boys for The Collaboration project. His remix credits are many and include: Depeche Mode, Madonna, Seal, Funky Green Dogs, Kylie Minogue, etc.

Rauhofer spun throughout the United States. He was the former resident DJ at the weekly gay dance night held at the Roxy in New York, which closed its doors in 2007. Rauhofer was formerly the resident DJ of the gay dance party called "Work". His party was held weekly at the Stereo nightclub in New York until March 3, 2008 when the City invoked eminent domain and acquired the building. "Work" was a monthly event, despite lacking a permanent venue.

Rauhofer was mostly known for spinning tribal house and continued to play many gay circuit party events, and was scheduled to play the ultimate events (White Party Palm Springs and One Mighty Weekend's Magic Journeys at Arabian Nights) prior to his falling ill in February 2013. The Collaboration was a dance music project created by Rauhofer. Rauhofer's first release as The Collaboration was "Do It Properly", a 1999 track produced with Victor Calderone, featuring Deborah Cooper on vocals. The Collaboration moniker was then used by Rauhofer on "Break 4 Love", a number one Hot Dance Music/Club Play hit featuring Pet Shop Boys.

Peter Rauhofer (Club 69) won the Grammy Award in 2000 for Best Remixer of the Year for his remix of Cher's "Believe".

On April 17, 2013, it was made public that Rauhofer was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A message was posted on his Facebook page by his friend and manager, Angelo Russo, informing friends and fans of the situation. On May 7, 2013, Peter Rauhofer passed away.

Today I am super proud to be celebrating 1000 days clean of crystal meth !!!
And releasing this very special Remix…

For those that don’t know my journey so far: 10 years ago when I was living in Sydney and Melbourne for several years, I initially got introduced to ice via the dating apps, and subsequently got caught up in a vicious cycle of drug and sex addiction. Because I mainly used as a hook up drug on weekends, this quickly became a regular pattern of abuse that I struggled to break free from. To the point where I wasn’t even really enjoying what I was doing anymore.

Something had to change!

And it most certainly did!

My mother passed away.

And not long after, I made the decision to relocate to Lismore.

Since then it’s been one major tree change, three years of local community, connection, reflection, recovery, grief, loss, love, support, and of course the amazing natural healing power of Mother Nature!

I’d previously lost many good people in my life, work opportunities, my health, my reputation, and of course a shitload of money due to my addiction.

The added stigma surrounding ice is still rife in our community, so I totally understand how very difficult it is to even open up and reach out for help, without being judged. It’s hard enough to try and quit crystal meth to get clean.

But I am more than happy to be that uncomfortable conversation starter for anyone who needs it.

I know that publicly sharing my own personal story has also helped to motivate and inspire other friends to come clean about being clean. Huge kudos to you too! And I hope that continues to be the case moving forward…

Massive thanks to all those who have been here with me on this “manic to Magic” journey. You know who you are, and for that I am truly grateful and I love you dearly !!!

Easing into my 50s, I’m happy to say that I’m living my best life, so much healthier, happier, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually too.

Thankfully, Music has always been there, my life passion, and a constant source of happiness.

So when I decided to release a commemorative Remix for today, and knowing the power of music and how it connects people, I thought how very fitting it would be to work on “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life”.

The song is one of my all time faves, and I really hope you love the Deep House treatment I’ve given it, so enjoy!

Massive Attack are an English Trip Hop band formed in 1988 in Bristol, England, by Robert "3D" Del Naja, Adrian "Tricky" Thaws, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall. The band currently consists of Del Naja, Thaws and Marshall, with Shara Nelson and Horace Andy as guest vocalists.

Their debut album Blue Lines was released in 1991, with the groundbreaking single "Unfinished Sympathy" followed by a string of hits…

So here’s a little background on the 3rd instalment in my “Soul Deep” series...

In Sanskrit, the Root Chakra is known as the Mooladhara Chakra; this root defines our relationship with Mother Earth. It influences our passion, creativity, youthfulness, vitality and most importantly, our basic survival instincts. The Root Chakra is represented by the colour red, which is also an indication for the need of logic, realistic thinking and order in our lives.

Moreover, it is also symbolic of our physical strength, our sexuality and the flight and fight response that tends to activate within our body when we sense danger. The Root Chakra is attached to the gland known as Gonads, and is also connected with the sense of smell within the body.

Whether you’re in recovery mode, need to unwind and relax, reflect, reconnect, recharge or meditate, this nearly 2-hour Mix goes much deeper and less commercial than my previous two Soul Deep and Soul Deeper, with ambient chillaxing tracks from Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, ATB, and Chicane.

Rebel Heart Reworked

Amid the mass leak from the Material Girl’s 13th album in late 2014, albeit 32 tracks in total, she released the album for pre-order on iTunes on December 20th, with 6 tracks being available for download.

Rebel Heart was co-written & co-produced with Diplo, Kanye West & the late Avicii. Thematically, Rebel Heart represents the singer's romantic and rebellious sides; the ideas grew organically during the writing and recording sessions. Musically, it is a pop record which merges an array of genres such as 90’s house, trap, and reggae, while using acoustic guitars and gospel choir. Some of the songs are autobiographical in nature while others talk about love and Her career.

To promote the album, Madonna made several television appearances and performances. Further promotion was done by the Rebel Heart Tour, which started in September 2015 & concluded in March 2016, visiting North America, Europe, Asia & Australia, including Her unique MTV-unplugged-style “Tears of a Clown” performance in Melbourne, which I was fortunate enough to see!

I’ve chosen 13 tracks from the album, including the 4 single releases & one extra-funky mashup.

This "Like A Virgin" mix is the twelfth in a monthly series of Madonna album reworks.

I've chosen all nine album tracks, all unmixed, plus the bonus "Into The Groove" track that was included on the 1985 re-release edition.

Madonna wanted to be the record's producer, however her label was not ready to give her the artistic freedom she desired, so she chose Nile Rodgers due to his work with Chic and David Bowie.

The cover sleeve and images were shot by Steven Miesel, who would become a regular collaborator with her. The Virgin Mary or the whore? These were the two extreme images of women she had known vividly, and remembered from her childhood. To quote the Queen...

"The (cover) photo was a statement of independence, if you wanna be a virgin, you are welcome. But if you wanna be a whore, it's your fucking right to be so."

This "Madonna" mix is the eleventh in a monthly series of Her album reworks.

Produced by John "Jellybean" Benitez, Mark Kamins & the late Reggie Lucas, and recorded between May 1982 & April 1983, including five singles (three Top 10 hits), the album has an upbeat synthetic disco sound, using new technology of the time, including the Linn drum machine, Moog bass & Oberheim OB-X synthesiser.

I've chosen all eight tracks & really tried to re-capture the original recordings, with some of my fave M-Remixers, giving it my 35th anniversary take on this quintessential release.
